Govt Bans 47 More Chinese Apps in India- PUBG, Ali Express on Radar

About a month after banning 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, the Indian government has further banned 47 more Chinese apps in the country. The centre hasn’t made any official announcements yet. However, the list of freshly banned apps is expected to be released soon.

According to a tweet by DD News, the list mainly includes apps that are clones or variants of the previously banned applications. Many apps in the market have similar names, functionalities, and operational ethics, making up for data privacy and security concerns.

Note that the government is inspecting as many as 275 apps with Chinese links. As per a report by The Economic Times, apps like PUBG Mobile, Alibaba’s AliExpress, Zili, Resso, ULike, etc. are on the radar.

Resso and ULike are owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance. On the other hand, Zili is a short video app by Xiaomi. Several other apps by Xiaomi, Meitu, LBE Tech, Perfect Corp, Sina Corp, Netease Games, and Yoozoo Global, are being analyzed.

Now, not all of these apps could be banned. However, if the ministry finds anything that violates national interests, it may impose a permanent ban on these apps.

Previously Banned Chinese Apps

To recall, TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser, CamScanner, Helo, YouCam, Club Factory, etc., were previously blacklisted by the government. The order came under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, after the rising tensions at the Indo-China border.

These apps were removed from the Play Store and Apple App Store. Not only that, but the telcos were asked to block connectivity for these apps, rendering them useless.

Days after the ban, the respective companies were asked to address the concerns and prove that they complied with data privacy.

Now, while the new list isn’t out yet, it’d be interesting to see which 47 Chinese apps are banned by the ministry. We’ll update the article with the same once the government makes an official announcement. Stay tuned.
